• Upon receipt of your 20 year letter you have 90 days to elect Reserve Component Survivor Benefits (RC-SBP)
• RC-SBP allows retirement eligible members to elect, at a cost of reduced retired pay during their lifetimes, to provide up to 55% of their retired pay to an eligible survivor upon the member’s death
• If you do not make an election with 90 days will default to Option C
• You do not have to take this but will have to make an election (Option A) to deferr
• To check cost of RC-SBP go to: HRC Homepage, search SBP calculator, click “Army Reserve Retirement Calculator, use the link: https://www.hrc.army.mil/Calculators/Survivor BenefitPayCal.aspx
• What you elect at the time of your 20 year letter will reflect at age 60
• You don’t start paying RC-SBP until age 60
• Reduced Eligibility Age
o Effective 28 January 2008
o Reduced eligibility age for those who serve on active duty in support of a contingency operation including wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or under Title 32 for purposes of responding to a national emergency
• At age 59 HRC will send you an application for retired pay packet (make sure you keep your address current)
